Milan is renowned as one of the world capitals of design and fashion. The word milliner derives from the name of the city. Milan is famous for its fashion houses and shops (such as along via Montenapoleone) and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in the Piazza Duomo (reputed to be the world's oldest shopping mall). Shops are usually open from 09.00 to 12.30/13.00 and from 15.30/16.00 to 19.30. Shopping centres are open roughly from 09.00 to 21.30/22.00. They are closed on Mondays in the morning (till 14.00) and on Sundays. At Christmas and in other holidays are open everyday.
Beside the city centre, Milano has a lot of shopping areas, the best knows are:
- Corso Buenos Aires: starting in the city centre it continues for 2.5km to the Central Station, covered of shops for all tastes.
- Corso Vercelli: Near Cadorna Station, this street is full of high fashion shops, jewelries and restaurants.
